Is it "autistic person" or "person with autism"?

Writer: kuriouskatkuriouskat

Spoiler alert: As long as you're trying, I really don't care.

There's a debate as to whether it's better to use person-first language ("person with autism") or identity-first language ("autistic person") when speaking about people like me. And some people can get very vocal about what they believe!

When you work with me, effort is the most important thing.

This is just my perspective.

Of course, if another neurodivergent person requests you to use specific terminology, do it. For many people, their neurodivergence is a huge part of their identity, and that's why they prefer identity-first language. When I refer to myself, I usually say I am an "autistic person."

But again, I prioritize effort over whether you use the "correct" words or phrasing.

I promise I will not get mad if you're genuinely trying to educate yourself and happen to stumble. Learning is a process. This stuff wasn't talked about much even when I was growing up, and part of changing the dialogue is being patient as people learn.

I give you major kudos just for trying to learn about autism directly from an autistic person!
